There are two major stages in the development of audio description: it must be created and it must be delivered to patrons. Movie theaters, live performance venues, and museums have different needs and should select transmission systems suited to their unique specifications.
Movie Theaters
Audio description tracks should be delivered to theaters within the digital cinema package (DCP) supplied by studios. The theater will need to transmit the AD track to patrons via headphones maintained by the theater and loaned to customers upon request. The headsets should be routinely cleaned and tested so they are ready when patrons need them. Staff must be trained in the maintenance and use of the headsets and understand the difference between audio description, closed captions, and assistive listening devices.
Live Performance Venues
There are two ways of delivering AD for live performances: pre-recorded and live description. Although pre-recorded AD tracks can be convenient, only a live describer can ensure the timing of the descriptions match the action on stage and account for any unexpected occurrences - all part of the magic of live theatre. Performance venues can contract with an AD company to provide trained describers (and sometimes the necessary equipment as well), or they can develop their own program.
Museums
Typically, audio described tours are recorded and made available to patrons upon request, for no extra cost. AD tours often describe not only the artwork but also the physical environment and architecture of the building itself.
