The Audio Description Project

The Intrepid Museum

March 2023:  The Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum, based in New York City, is dedicated to educating online and in-person visitors about the history of American innovation, from the sea to the stars. The museum offers many accessible options for individuals, families, and groups.

In-Person Verbal Description and Touch Tours

For Individuals and Families

The Intrepid Museum offers customized verbal description and touch tours with advance request (at no additional cost). Please email access@IntrepidMuseum.org or call 646-381-5158 to arrange a tour, ideally at least two weeks before your planned visit. Visitors can also explore on their own by borrowing a tactile guide with talking pen from the museum's Information Desk at no cost. The Museum's mobile guide is screen-reader friendly and features description, way-finding information, label text, videos, and additional context.

For Schools and Groups

The museum offers free tours and visits for NYC-based organizations and schools serving individuals or students who are blind or have low vision. Pre-visits to help students prepare for the trip are also available. To book a visit, please complete the Onsite Program Request Form and select Verbal Description Tour as the program type.

User Testing Opportunity

The Intrepid Museum will be seeking individuals who use screen readers to do some user testing of the mobile guide. Participants will receive an honorarium for their time. If you know this is something you may be interested in, please email access@IntrepidMuseum.org.

Virtual Verbal Description Programs

The Intrepid Museum will bring back free virtual verbal description programs this year, focusing on special exhibitions opening in the coming months. More information to come!
